Gannett the largest United States newspaper publishing groups, is cutting more jobs! How is a graduate pursuing a journalism degree supposed to find a job? Anyone have any hints. My love is writing and I love to read the paper. I don’t get my news online…online is a tool I use more for commentary on what Ive read in the paper and seen on the nightly news. Online editions of papers are a great tool for those out of town- how great is it to be in Florida and look up your hometown news where you grew up. I don’t think news online is shutting down papers because of the issue of timeliness, cost, or technology- It’s a matter of convenience.
We go online for news the same reasons we stop at the gas station and buy a soda for $2 rather than but a 6 pack at the grocery for just a few dollars more. Convenience- society is fast past and gets faster everyday but when there is a spare moment, a tangible, crisp newspaper will always win me over…..
Another issue is content. As an individual I am on the internet all day, I see the national headlines. I use my local paper more for coupons, classifieds, local events not scrolling across my google page.
Ha! And classifieds online…I hate applying for jobs online, I like to shake hands and know the company Im applying for not just forward them my resume lost in translation with lost formatting….Talk to me about my experiences…Im more than whats on the front of my resume, I’ve gained a knowledge well beyond what I can put on paper, I have an entire portfolio full of sample stories, completed projects, presentations, and publications I’ve worked hard on…I know that companies don’t get all that on a single attachment!
